First T1D receives donor islets that produce insulin WITHOUT immunosuppression!

  • 2 min read
Sana Biotechnology have announced a significant step in the use of islet cells for T1D treatment in what's being talked about as a breakthrough that could lead to a 'cure'!
Islets of Langerhans

Using Sana's Hypoimmune (HIP) Technology, islet cells were successfully transplanted into a donor who began producing insulin. After four weeks, C-peptide levels—a key indicator of functioning, insulin-producing beta cells—had increased, all without the need for immune-suppressing drugs and with no safety concerns.

In all previous islet -transplant studies, the use of anti-rejection drugs has been necessary, often causing additional health complications.

This was the first-in-human study of HIP technology that enabled modified islet cells to evade detection by the immune system and preventing the body from attacking or rejecting the transplanted cells - a significant advancement in transplant science.

MRI scans confirmed that the transplanted cells were alive, functional, and thriving 28 days after the procedure, providing clear evidence of graft survival.

As the study continues, researchers will closely monitor patient outcomes, with the potential to transform cell-based therapies for diabetes.
