
This morning I read an online post that Apple is reportedly exploring a screenless health and fitness band that could compete with wearables such as Whoop. It immediately caught my attention. In the last few weeks, our website records have shown repeated Apple-linked activity involving Libreband, followed by an attempt to obtain one of our armbands.
According to reporting by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple's industrial design team has been exploring a broader rethink of its wearable products, including the possibility of a fitness tracker without a screen. The concept has subsequently been described as a potential screenless fitness band, in a similar style to Whoop, putting Apple into a growing category of devices designed around continuous health and fitness monitoring.
Nothing has been announced by Apple and there is currently no confirmation that such a product will reach the market. But before these reports emerged, we had already noticed Apple researching Libreband and Love My Libre.
We had already noticed Apple's interest in Libreband
Libreband is a brand name of Love My Libre launched in 2018 and used for CGM armbands designed to be worn as a protective cover over a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) on the upper arm.
At the start of August, we began noticing unusual activity within our website records. A pattern of visits originating from Apple included specific interest in Libreband products, sizing and fitting tips.
Repeated activity from Apple-registered addresses in California intrigued us, especially as we are a very small UK business operating in such a niche area, principally serving people with type 1 diabetes in the UK.
Then we received an order for a Libreband linked to an Apple patent engineer named on patents involving stretchable bands, with delivery directly to a known Apple address. As we are a consumer business only, the order was declined.
Recent developments at Apple put that attempted purchase into a very different context. We had already wondered what benefit Apple might gain from obtaining the product and what information could be learned from examining its design, construction and fit. Was the Libreband intended for some form of product analysis or reverse-engineering exercise? We don't know, but Apple's reported interest in screenless health bands makes the question considerably more intriguing.
Apple has been researching health-sensing bands for years
Apple's interest in putting health technology into wearable bands isn't new. Its patent history shows that engineers have explored ways of incorporating sensors and electronics directly into flexible and fabric-based wearables from at least 2018.
An Apple patent with a priority date in March 2018 describes a fabric-based item incorporating a stretchable band designed to fit around part of a person's body and specifically identifies a wristband, headband or armband among the possible forms the technology could take.
The proposed technology goes considerably beyond an ordinary watch strap. Apple describes circuitry incorporated into the fabric and sensors capable of collecting physiological measurements including ECG, blood pressure and respiration rate. Wireless communications could then transmit information collected by the wearable to external electronic equipment.
The patent doesn't necessarily mean that Apple will manufacture that exact product, as technology companies routinely patent ideas that never become commercial devices, but it does establish that Apple has spent years researching the idea of making the band itself part of a health-sensing system.
Then came another sensor-band report
In July 2026, an industry leaker claimed that Apple had experimented with incorporating a health sensor directly into the band of a future Apple Watch. That particular report remains unconfirmed and should be treated accordingly.
Only weeks later came much more significant reporting. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple's industrial design team has been exploring several new approaches to wearables, including a device without a screen.
The possibility of a screenless Apple fitness band suddenly looked much less hypothetical and, from our perspective, Apple's earlier interest in Libreband became considerably harder to ignore.
So why has Apple been interested in Libreband?
There are important differences between Libreband and the type of device Apple is reportedly exploring. Libreband isn't an electronic health tracker and doesn't collect health information. It works independently of CGM technology as a physical accessory, without any electronic interaction with the sensor.
But it is a product designed around something that is becoming increasingly important in wearable technology: wearing a sensor continuously and comfortably on the body. The strap has to accommodate different arm sizes, remain securely positioned during everyday movement and allow a sensor to remain accessible and functional. The use of an adjustable neoprene strap is a distinctive feature of Libreband and central to the fit of our products.
These are likely to be practical considerations for any company developing wearable technology that people are expected to wear continuously. Whether any of this explains Apple's interest in Libreband is speculation.
What makes it interesting is the sequence of events. Apple-linked activity involving Libreband appeared in our records and an attempt was then made to obtain a Libreband. Reports subsequently emerged of Apple experimenting with sensor technology incorporated into wearable bands, and now Apple is reportedly exploring a screenless fitness wearable.
Screenless wearables are becoming a much bigger story
Whoop has demonstrated that a wearable doesn't necessarily need a screen to become an everyday health and fitness device, while smart rings, like Oura, have pushed the idea further by collecting information continuously and moving most interaction onto a smartphone. This is particularly underlined by recent investments by medtech giants, Abbott in Whoop and Dexcom in Oura.
Removing the screen changes the role of the wearable. Instead of being a miniature computer on the wrist, the device collects data in the background while software, increasingly including AI, interprets the information and displays it through a smartphone app.
That approach is particularly interesting as wearable companies expand beyond steps and exercise towards sleep, recovery, cardiovascular measurements and metabolic health, whilst eyeing up medical data too.
Google's latest Pixel Watch development shows just how quickly that boundary is shifting, with the company introducing Insulin Resistance Trends to its wearables.
CGMs have been doing this for years
The first commercial continuous glucose monitor was the MiniMed, produced in 1999 by Medtronic, although this type of medtech is now dominated globally by Abbott's FreeStyle Libre sensor products, both in terms of user numbers and geographic reach. CGMs themselves could also be considered screenless wearable health sensors. They remain attached to the body for days at a time, collecting glucose information continuously, while users generally interact with the data through a smartphone app or receiver.
For FreeStyle Libre, the upper arm is the recommended location for wearing the sensor continuously. A small filament inserted under the skin measures glucose, while the sensor itself remains externally attached to the arm, allowing data to be collected as the user goes about everyday life.
CGMs and a possible future Apple fitness band are clearly different technologies designed for different purposes, but both sit within a much broader change in wearable health technology: moving from devices we actively interact with towards sensors that quietly collect information while we get on with everyday life. In the process, the emphasis increasingly shifts from the physical wearable itself towards the software or health platform interpreting the data it produces.
Apple's health ambitions are getting bigger
Health is already an important part of Apple's wearable ecosystem. Apple Watch collects information including activity and heart-rate data, while the Health app brings together health information from Apple devices, compatible devices and third-party apps.
The next stage of wearable technology could increasingly be about collecting more information, more continuously, with less active interaction from the person wearing the device. A screenless wearable would fit naturally into that direction.
Whether Apple actually launches one remains unknown, as does the exact reason Apple was researching Libreband. But when reports emerge that one of the world's biggest technology companies is exploring a new type of wearable, it's difficult not to look again at the evidence sitting in your own website records.
We noticed Apple's interest before we knew about its reported plans. What Apple reveals next could make that interest considerably more interesting.
