From new evidence supporting continuous ketone monitoring and the completed UK move to Libre 3 Plus to the rapid expansion of hybrid closed-loop technology, Summer 2026 has brought important developments across the FreeStyle Libre ecosystem. Here is what Libre users need to know, including which changes are available now and which remain part of Abbott's future plans.
Summer 2026: what has changed for FreeStyle Libre?
Summer 2026 has not been defined by one completely new generation of FreeStyle Libre sensor. Instead, Abbott has advanced several parts of its diabetes technology portfolio at the same time. Libre 3 Plus has replaced Libre 3 in the UK, Libre sensors are becoming more closely connected with automated insulin delivery systems, and Abbott has presented new evidence supporting Libre Duo, its combined continuous glucose and ketone sensor.
Abbott is also adding more software-led support to its technology. Libre Assist, introduced within the Libre app in the US, uses artificial intelligence to assess a photograph or description of a meal and estimate its likely glucose impact before it is eaten. Together, these developments show that FreeStyle Libre is increasingly being built around connected sensing, insulin delivery, personalised insights and, eventually, measurements beyond glucose alone.
Libre Duo became Abbott's biggest ADA 2026 story

Abbott's most important diabetes story around the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions in June concerned Libre Duo, the company's dual glucose and ketone sensor.
At ADA 2026, Abbott presented findings from several studies showing that diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) remains a serious and sometimes poorly recognised complication for people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The company reported increases in DKA-related hospitalisations across age groups and highlighted evidence that many cases may not initially be recognised when people arrive in hospital. The findings add to Abbott's case for continuously monitoring ketones rather than relying only on blood or urine testing once symptoms or high glucose levels have already appeared.
Abbott had already secured a European CE mark for Libre Duo and Libre Duo 10 Day in May. Libre Duo provides up to 15 days of glucose and ketone readings and is intended for adults aged 18 and over, while Libre Duo 10 Day is intended for people aged two and over. Abbott plans to begin introducing the systems in selected European markets during 2026, although this does not mean they are yet routinely available through the NHS.
The significance of Libre Duo is not simply that another measurement has been added to a CGM. For someone using an insulin pump, rising ketones can provide an important warning that insufficient insulin is reaching the body, particularly during illness, persistent high glucose or suspected infusion-site failure. Continuous ketone information could therefore eventually provide another layer of protection against DKA.
Abbott has also submitted the technology to the US Food and Drug Administration, making the progress of Libre Duo one of the most important developments to watch over the coming year.

Libre 3 Plus has now replaced Libre 3 in the UK
The most immediate change for UK users is the transition from FreeStyle Libre 3 to FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus.
Abbott began phasing out Libre 3 after introducing the Plus sensors, with Libre 3 Plus becoming its replacement in the UK. For people previously prescribed Libre 3, this means prescriptions need to move to Libre 3 Plus rather than continuing indefinitely with the original sensor.
The everyday experience remains familiar. Libre 3 Plus sends glucose readings automatically every minute, works with Abbott's existing connected services and retains the very small sensor format associated with Libre 3. The most obvious difference is that it can be worn for up to 15 days rather than 14, while its compatibility with automated insulin delivery is becoming increasingly important as hybrid closed-loop access expands.
For existing Libre 3 users, this is therefore an evolution rather than a completely different CGM. However, it leaves Abbott with two 15-day Plus sensors in the UK, Libre 2 Plus and Libre 3 Plus, both increasingly important to its automated insulin delivery strategy.

Hybrid closed loop is rapidly becoming mainstream for children
One of the most significant UK diabetes developments this summer has been the speed at which hybrid closed-loop (HCL) technology is reaching children and young people.
By May 2026, around 72.3% of eligible children and young people in England and Wales had received hybrid closed-loop technology, equivalent to approximately 32,000 young people. The rollout has also substantially narrowed previous inequalities in access between ethnic and socioeconomic groups.
Importantly, this is not a FreeStyle Libre-specific figure. Different HCL systems use different combinations of pumps, algorithms and CGMs, including products from both Abbott and Dexcom. What the figure does demonstrate is how quickly automated insulin delivery is moving from specialist technology towards routine type 1 diabetes care.
That matters for FreeStyle Libre because sensor choice is increasingly connected to pump choice. A person may no longer be choosing a CGM simply because they prefer its size, app or wear time; they may also need to consider which pump and algorithm can communicate with it.
Where does FreeStyle Libre fit into UK closed-loop choices?
FreeStyle Libre now has several important routes into automated insulin delivery in the UK.
FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus works with Omnipod 5, creating a tubeless hybrid closed-loop option in which glucose information from the sensor is used by the Omnipod algorithm to adjust insulin delivery. The person still needs to announce meals and deliver meal boluses, which is why the system remains hybrid rather than fully closed loop.
FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus is also being integrated into automated insulin delivery, including the mylife Loop system combining CamAPS FX and mylife YpsoPump. This creates a different route for people who want the smaller Libre 3 Plus format while using HCL therapy.
These developments are changing what it means to choose a CGM. Increasingly, the decision is about the complete combination of sensor, pump, algorithm, smartphone and NHS availability rather than the sensor alone.

Libre Assist brings AI into the Libre ecosystem

Another interesting development is Libre Assist, which brings artificial intelligence into Abbott's glucose ecosystem.
Introduced within the newer Libre app in the US, Libre Assist allows users to photograph a meal, upload an existing image or describe food in text. AI then assesses the likely glucose impact of individual ingredients and the meal overall, before suggesting possible changes that could reduce the expected glucose response.
For someone wearing a compatible Libre sensor, the software can subsequently compare its prediction with what actually happened to their glucose after eating. Abbott says Libre Assist is not intended to replace professional medical advice or be used independently to make insulin treatment decisions.
Libre Assist is not currently a standard feature of the UK Libre apps, but its development is significant because it moves Abbott beyond simply showing glucose information towards software that attempts to interpret it.
That could make CGM information easier to understand, particularly for people trying to identify patterns between food and glucose. It also introduces new questions about how reliably AI can judge portion sizes, ingredients and cooking methods from an image and how much people should rely on algorithm-generated health advice.
Lingo continues Abbott's move beyond diabetes
Abbott's ambitions increasingly extend beyond people diagnosed with diabetes through Lingo, its consumer glucose biosensor.
Lingo uses sensing technology developed from Abbott's experience with FreeStyle Libre but targets people without diabetes who want to understand how food, exercise and everyday behaviour affect their glucose. It combines sensor readings with app-based guidance focused on metabolic health rather than insulin treatment.
There has not been a major new UK Lingo product launch comparable with the Libre Duo developments this summer, so Lingo should not be confused with one of Abbott's new Summer 2026 announcements. Its importance is strategic: it demonstrates how technology originally developed for diabetes is being adapted for the much larger consumer health market.
Abbott's investment in WHOOP points further into connected health

Another indication of Abbott's interest beyond conventional diabetes technology came with its strategic investment in WHOOP, the wearable company best known for tracking sleep, strain and recovery.
Abbott joined WHOOP's $575 million Series G funding round in 2026 as a strategic investor. WHOOP said the funding would support global expansion and development of increasingly personalised health technology.
The relationship is particularly interesting when viewed alongside Lingo and FreeStyle Libre. Abbott has decades of experience in medical devices and biosensing, while WHOOP has built its business around interpreting continuous streams of activity, sleep and recovery data for consumers.
There has been no announcement that FreeStyle Libre will simply become part of WHOOP, and the investment should not be interpreted as confirmation of a future product integration. It does, however, provide another indication of Abbott's interest in a future where continuous biosensing sits alongside other forms of wearable health data.
The development also mirrors a wider trend among CGM manufacturers. Dexcom has invested strategically in Oura, while Abbott has invested in WHOOP, suggesting both major CGM companies see established consumer wearables as an increasingly important part of the connected-health landscape.

Libre remains the dominant NHS-prescribed CGM
Despite increasingly strong competition, FreeStyle Libre remains by far the most widely prescribed CGM range in the UK.
The latest annual figures previously analysed by Libre Life showed approximately 380,000 Libre users in England during 2024/25, compared with around 26,000 Dexcom users. Dexcom remained much smaller, but its user numbers were increasing considerably faster from the previous year.
That makes the next release particularly interesting. The latest NHS prescribing data is due on 20 August 2026 and should provide a fresh picture of how CGM use is changing across England and more broadly, across the UK.
Love My Libre holds some direct evidence of people with type 1 diabetes moving from FreeStyle Libre to Dexcom through trends observed across its own platform. Those observations cannot tell us how widespread switching is nationally, and prescribing data itself cannot identify every individual who has changed brand. However, the NHS figures should show whether Dexcom's recent growth is continuing, whether Libre is still adding users strongly and whether the enormous gap between the two manufacturers is beginning to narrow.
Libre Life will be looking at those figures when they are published.
The FreeStyle Libre ecosystem keeps expanding
FreeStyle Libre is increasingly more than the sensor worn on someone's arm. Its ecosystem includes apps for viewing readings, LibreLinkUp for sharing glucose information with family members and carers, LibreView for healthcare teams, compatible insulin pumps and emerging software such as Libre Assist.
This connectivity can make diabetes management easier, but it also means that people's experience of a CGM increasingly depends on the wider ecosystem surrounding it. Phone compatibility, apps, cloud services, pump integration and access to historical data can become almost as important as the sensor itself.
Manufacturer support exists alongside diabetes charities, healthcare teams, large private Facebook groups and independent publications where people compare technologies and discuss the everyday realities of using them. These communities serve different purposes, and as diabetes technology becomes increasingly connected, access to genuinely independent information becomes particularly valuable.
A platform built on personal data
Many of Abbott's latest developments ultimately have one thing in common: data.
Libre Duo would combine two continuous measurements in one sensor. Hybrid closed-loop systems use glucose readings to influence insulin delivery. Libre Assist interprets food and compares its prediction with subsequent sensor readings. LibreView allows healthcare professionals to examine longer-term patterns, while LibreLinkUp allows glucose information to be shared with other people.
The potential benefits are considerable, from reducing the burden of diabetes management to identifying risks earlier. At the same time, increasingly connected systems mean greater quantities of personal health information passing through manufacturer-controlled apps and platforms.
As FreeStyle Libre becomes more closely connected with pumps, artificial intelligence and other health services, questions about portability, interoperability and user control become more important. People should be able to understand where their information goes, access it in a useful form and move between technologies without being unnecessarily locked into one company's ecosystem.
What is available now and what is still coming?
For UK users, Libre 2 Plus and Libre 3 Plus are available now, and both provide up to 15 days of wear. Their differences increasingly matter in the context of which automated insulin delivery combinations someone intends to use.
Libre Duo has received its European CE mark, but that does not mean it is yet routinely available in the UK. Libre Assist shows where Abbott is heading with AI-supported interpretation but is not currently a standard UK Libre feature. Lingo already represents a separate consumer-health branch of Abbott's biosensing business, while the WHOOP investment provides another glimpse of the company's wider interest in connected health.
The Summer 2026 story is therefore not about one revolutionary replacement for FreeStyle Libre. Abbott is developing the ecosystem in several directions simultaneously, including longer wear, automated insulin delivery, continuous ketone monitoring, AI-supported interpretation and consumer biosensing.

Abbott's investment in WHOOP also provides an interesting indication of just how much wider that connected-health landscape could eventually become.
We are also awaiting the next NHS prescribing figures, due on 20 August. FreeStyle Libre remains the clear market leader, but Love My Libre has seen evidence that some people with type 1 diabetes are moving to Dexcom. The new national figures should help show whether Dexcom's recent growth is continuing and whether the balance of CGM prescribing in England is beginning to change.
Abbott's challenge is no longer simply to put a glucose sensor on more arms. It must show that Libre can continue leading as diabetes care moves towards automated insulin delivery, multiple biomarkers and increasingly connected digital services, while ensuring the people generating the data retain meaningful choice and control.
