Night-time only insulin pump could solve overnight hypos

Luna Health night-time insulin pump

Managing blood sugar overnight remains one of the toughest challenges for people with Type 1 diabetes. Looking to address this, Luna Health, a new diabetes technology startup based in the US, has raised $23.6 million to advance a patch pump designed specifically for overnight use.

Luna’s device will not be a full-time insulin pump. Instead, it’s designed to complement multiple daily injections (MDI), so reducing the complexity and cost of traditional pumps, while addressing the specific problem of overnight glucose swings.

For many, night-time diabetes management is a major source of anxiety. In particular, parents of children with Type 1 often struggle with disturbed sleep, setting multiple alarms to check glucose levels. And some adults are known to avoid evening activities in fear of hypos occurring whilst asleep.

Over 80% of the glucose improvement from automated insulin delivery happens while people sleep. Yet millions of people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes who rely on insulin pens have no access to this life-changing technology.

Overnight, the Luna patch pump automatically delivers rapid-acting insulin, using CGM data and a closed-loop algorithm to adjust doses while a user sleeps. The intended users are people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes who rely on insulin pens.

Luna’s founders say that by targeting overnight control only, their patch pump offers a practical middle ground: fewer alarms, steadier mornings, and less disruption to daily routines.

The new funding will go toward: clinical studies; regulatory submissions; manufacturing capacity and expanding access programs.

Luna Health was founded by leaders previously involved with Beta Bionics, with both professional and personal experience in diabetes.

Although it may be some time before the patch pump is widely available, it’s an interesting approach that could provide a new option for safer, simpler overnight glucose management and we’ll be watching this startup with plenty of interest!
