Summer 2025: Catch-up with Abbott & Freestyle Libre News

Abbott agrees collabs with 4 pump providers for hybrid closed loop with combined glucose - ketone sensor

Abbott announced their intention to develop a combined glucose-ketone sensor back in 2022 as according to the company, there is a pressing need for a continuous glucose-ketone monitor for individuals who are at higher risk of developing DKA i.e. diabetic ketoacidosis.

What is a glucose-ketone sensor?

The new type of sensor will both detect and help to prevent DKA by providing wearers with early warnings of raised ketone levels, which can appear before other known symptoms.

Abbott’s sensor will be the same shape and size as the FreeStyle Libre 3/3 Plus.

When will the sensor be available?

A prototype version of the glucose-ketone sensor is already in clinical testing and pivotal trials are scheduled to start next year. It’s likely rollout will be towards the end of 2026, or even 2027.

How will the sensor integrate with pumps?

So far, partnerships with Tandem, Beta Bionics, Sequel MedTech, and Ypsomed have been announced to integrate their pump systems with the new dual sensor and enable Abbott’s sensors to work as part of a hybrid closed loop/AID systems.

How will these systems integrate?

Beta Bionics

The iLet Bionic Pancreas is the first and only AID system that autonomously makes 100% of insulin dosing decisions. This eliminates the need for carb counting or manual insulin correction calculations.

Ypsomed

Ypsomed confirmed they will connect their mylife Loop modular system, with its YpsoPump and the CamAPS FX controlling software to the new glucose-ketone sensor.

Tandem

Tandem will be integrating the t:slim X2 insulin pump featuring Control-IQ+ advanced hybrid closed-loop technology.

Sequel

Sequel’s twist will integrate with Abbott’s new sensor as part of an Automated Insulin Delivery (AID) System powered by Tidepool.

Other Abbott News

Partnership with Medtronic

Back in September 2024 it was revealed that Abbott are to produce a sensor for use with Medtronic insulin systems (as we reported here). The sensor will only be available from Medtronic so won’t be a direct competitor to FreeStyle Libre. No timeline has been given for launch yet.

Epic News!

Meanwhile in the US, Abbott have launched a new universal FreeStyle Libre app and have partnered with Epic EHR to integrate data from FreeStyle Libre (i.e. LibreView) directly into their electronic health record systems. Linking the systems will allow healthcare professionals to see glucose data from FreeStyle Libre devices within Epic and update healthcare records.

Epic is the leading provider of EHR software in the US with over 575,000 healthcare professionals using the systems and covering over 280 million patients.
